Kasungu, Malawi … At first it looks like a bundle of grass or bamboo moving cautiously along the road. As it gets closer one can make out feet protruding below it, then a body begins to take shape. As it gets even closer one can nearly recognize that a woman is carrying this massive bundle back to her village on her head. Chances are it will be the latest round of roofing for their village home, or maybe the fence of protection that surrounds the house. In any case, one never ceases to marvel at the ability of Malawi women to carry loads that defy the ability to do them.
