Salima, Malawi … Along the road to the lake, just east of Salima, and a small group of buildings has been constructed. A number of people with physical disabilities are tilling the land, and the resulting crops assist to make them self-reliant. The program is part of the effort by George Banda, and Kuthandiza Osayenda Disability Outreach (KODO), to assist those with walking disabilities. George grew up with a permanent disability himself, and he knows full well the problems faced by those who wish to support themselves, yet, have little chance for training, or obtaining the needed resources to establish self-sustaining enterprises.
The purpose of KODO is to teach the people to farm, raise their own crops, learn a trade, and where they can obtain resources to help them care for their families.
Construction started three years ago, and the facilities are now sufficiently completed for the training programs to be shifted from an older, much smaller facility in Salima. Looking at the overall program of KODO, George notes about some of the resources that are being made available to his clients, “The sick, disabled, poor, aged, help to the schools, the hospitals, the list goes on and on, these are just a few who have benefited. Thanks to your effort the demand of wheelchairs is growing daily.”
In recent years the Project has supplied funds, wheelchairs, walkers and other supplies to enlarge and sustain the programs at KODO.
