Lilongwe, Malawi … “At first the term sounded a bit strange,” noted Dick Stephens, of the Malawi Project after returning to the country after a several month absence.
“However, it didn’t take more than a couple of days before we knew exactly what the expression meant,” Stephens adds. “All we needed was to travel along one of the main tarmac roads and have a big lorry coming toward us from the other direction just as we neared some of the pot-holes along the roads edge that has caused deterioration that has eaten well into the pavement toward the center of the road.” Hence, the term, ‘the road is growing narrower.’”
Problems After Dark
As dangerous as it is to travel these narrowed roads during the day, the problems are compounded after dark. Not only must a driver face the bright lights of oncoming vehicles that often fail to dim their lights, they must also ride the center line to avoid hitting oncoming pedestrians, or being thrown off the road after hitting the pot-hole lined beams that have narrowed the roadways. This does not include the danger of hitting unsuspecting cows, goats, or dogs that wonder onto the roadway in the dark.
