It is hard to imagine Malawi without its lake. Lake Malawi is a major part of the country. It is approximately ¼ of the size of the nation, and it is certainly a major attraction for visitors to this central African nation.
The lake is 365 miles long, (number of days in a year), 52 miles wide (weeks in a year), and has 12 major rivers flowing into it (months in a year). This gives it the term, “the calendar lake”.
Lake Malawi is the fourth largest freshwater lake in the world by volume of water, the ninth largest by geographical size, and the third largest and second deepest lake in Africa.
The lake is said to contain a larger variety of freshwater fish than can be found in North America and Europe combined.
No trip to the country is complete without some time on or near Lake Malawi.
