Lebanon, Indiana … As I sit in my warm and comfortable house looking at our Christmas tree and the gifts gathered under the pine branches the television is making note of the fact the average family’s gift giving this year will average over $900.00. At the same time, I have in front of me a note from Wilson Tembo, Executive Director for Action for Progress in Malawi noting the famine in Malawi is as bad as the one in 2001-02. That hit me because we were working in Malawi in 01-02 and the famine at that time was catastrophic. People were dying in the fields and along the roads, and friends we knew like family were so famine effected we could hardly recognize them.
As you finish your gift giving and celebrate the holidays, I am appealing to you to add just one more gift to your year-end list. That is to take a minute to program a contribution to the Malawi Project, or a check to supply food to people who are starving. It may be the most important gift you give this holiday season.
