FORESTS ARE FADING FAST

Lilongwe, Malawi … From a distance it almost looks like the bicycle has wings. As they reach nearer it becomes evident the bicyclist is transporting large bundles of charcoal to markets where they will supply much needed energy. It is obvious some sort of material for cooking and cleaning is essential in a nation where few have access to electricity, yet cutting trees in Malawi is proving catastrophic to the nations remaining forestland.

Malawi is one of the least electrified nations on earth. As little as 11% of the total population (42% urban and 4% in rural areas) has access to electricity. Alternative sources are needed if the nation is going to keep any of its forest land.
