HIV DOWN, CHOLERA UP, CLEAN WATER NEEDED

Lilongwe, Malawi … For every 1,000 people in Malawi, the number of cases of HIV in 1995 was 13 per 1,000. By 2000 the rate had dropped to 10. By 2005 it was down to 6, and in 2010 it was reduced to 4. By 2015 it was down to 3, and in 2020 it reached 1.

On the other hand, between March 2022 to January 2025, Malawi recorded 61,639 cases of cholera and 1,786 cholera-related deaths. Clean water, rather than that of contaminated rivers and pools, is critical to the reduction of cholera, and that will only happen when enough wells (boreholes in Malawi) are drilled to supply clean, pure water.
